Understanding the organisation’s ‘Why’ and ‘How

Creating Meaning and Purpose

  • People come to work everyday hoping to make a contribution to something worthwhile, to make a difference
  • Meaning and purpose motivates people
  • Purpose driven companies make more money, have more engaged employees and loyal customers, and are better at innovation and change
  • The organisation’s purpose is the end to which the business plan is directed
  • Purpose needs to permeate through the organisation so people connect with it at all levels. It needs to resonate for everyone
  • With Kendo, organisations can define their purpose and communicate it throughout the organisation so that individuals have a shared understanding of why the organisation exists
  • At the individual level people define their Role Purpose, and their own Personal Purpose, making the connection between what I do every day, how it impacts my organisation and my own sense of satisfaction

Values and Behaviours

  • Once we’re clear on why we exist as an organisation, its important to know what the organisation stands for and how people are expected to work together
  • The organisation’s values are the guiding principles. They call out the behaviours that are expected of people and they guide how decisions are made
  • Kendo allows you to define these organisational values so that they can be clearly communicated through the organisation and embedded at all levels

Adding Purpose and Values (CEO and Admin only)

  • Only certain individuals have the ability to add Purpose and Values for the organisation, including the CEO and System Admin
  • Select “Add” to enter the Purpose or Values
  • Enter the organisation’s Purpose statement
  • Enter each organisational value separately
  • Add the behaviours that describe what you would expect to see if people were demonstrating that value
  • “Add Value” allows you to add additional values and behaviours. These can be updated at any time
  • Once added, all individuals will be able to view the Organisation Purpose and Values from the My Company section of Kendo

Viewing the Organisation’s Purpose and Values

  • On the Purpose and Values,  screen under My Company, organisations can add
    • The organisation’s Purpose statement
    • The Organisation’s Values. This might include a value and its description and a number of behaviours that describe the value in action.
  • Individuals will be able to view these from the My Company section of Kendo
  • Purpose and values led organisations perform better in the long term. 
  • By articulating clearly why the organisation exists and what it stands for, employees can connect with it in a meaningful way and build a bond that pulls the organisation together to achieve success
  • Refer to your organisation’s Purpose and Values frequently to provide context to your strategy, culture and way of operating
  • Ensure your people practices (e.g. reward, recognition, recruitment, learning, performance management) are all aligned to and reference your organisation’s purpose and values
