Board Skills Matrix

Ensuring the board has the right mix of skills

  • The Board is responsible for ensuring it has the skills, knowledge and experience needed to effectively steer the company forward
  • Board skills generally encompass:
    • Industry: Experience in and knowledge of the industry in which the organisation operates;
    • Technical: Technical/professional skills and specialist knowledge to assist with ongoing aspects of the board’s role;
    • Governance: Essential governance knowledge; and
    • Behavioural: The attributes and competencies enabling individual board members to use their knowledge and skills to function well as team members and to interact with key stakeholders.
  • Board skills can be customised to each organisation depending on the industry and board requirements (as Admin guide for adding technical skills)
  • Board skills for each board member are defined in their Board Role in Kendo
  • The skills matrix is used to assess and report on the current skills and experience of board members and to identify any gaps that may exist.
  • These skills are assessed by each individual board member in their skills matrix in their My Kendo section of Kendo.
  • Growth goals can be added for any skills that need development
  • The overall skills matrix results are available in the Board section of Kendo. All board members are able to view the results, ensuring that an open conversation can be had about the skills and composition of the Board
  • The assessments should be completed at least annually.
